deciding when to leave relationship

When you’re in a serious relationship that’s taken a turn, or you’re both simply not ‘feeling the love’ anymore, it can make you start to think about some serious changes. But, most of us aren’t easily swayed to leave a relationship quickly.

Once upon a time, chances are you felt strongly for the person, and you started a relationship with them for a reason. So, even if you fight, have different opinions or goals, or simply have fallen out of love with each other, it can be a difficult decision to make when to leave a relationship.

If you’ve been struggling with the idea, or are wondering if it’s time for your relationship to end, consider these tips before making your final decision.

#1. Are You Living In The Past?

If you’re not going through the best of times in your relationship, and find yourself daydreaming of better days, first dates, and going back to a time when your relationship was fresh, loving, and great, it could be time to consider leaving. You shouldn’t have to live in the past when it comes to a relationship, because the present should be just as good!

#2. Are The Good Times Few And Far Between?

Even if your relationship does have its good moments, it’s important to consider how often they happen, and more importantly, if they come less than the painful moments. Some people stay in a relationship through the hardships and pain because of a few shining moments of happiness here and there, but no one in a serious relationship should have to wonder when the next ‘good time’ is going to show up, only to have to suffer 99% of the time through everything else.

#3. Do You Both Want Change?

If your significant other wants you to make significant changes to how you live your life, or your personality, chances are it’s because they’re not happy with you the way they are. People can change naturally over time, but when someone asks you to make changes because they don’t like you for who you are, it can be a giant red flag. You have to consider the same thing for yourself, though. If you’re not happy with your partner, and are constantly wishing they would change everything about themselves, it could be a clear sign that it’s time to walk away, for the sake of you both.

#4. Are There Issues That Don’t Change?

If there are serious issues within your relationship that are causing damage, and they’ve been addressed, you have every right to expect them to change, or at least for your partner to make an attempt at it. If there is a consistent problem that keeps happening over and over again, there’s a good chance it’s never going to change. It’s an unfortunately, vicious cycle that will just keep happening over and over again.

It can be difficult to leave a relationship – especially one that’s been a part of your life for a long time. But, when it comes to your overall health and well being, you have to eventually make the choice that works for you, so you can live your best life, and not have to live in the confines of a suffocating, unhealthy relationship.
